Anthroposophy presents life after death as part of evolving consciousness when we first leave world. The etheric body simply goes to nothing while astral body continues existence for sometime. The preparation for incrantion starts when viewing karmic connections that decide future life. Reincarnation is an ancient idea most widely associated with hinduism as people are reborn into countless lives again and again.
Honestly, I hope reincarnation is not true though I've always felt as if I was born into the wrong life. Sometimes I'm able to say why and other times not. A lily may grow amongst the dandelions to only realize it doesn't belong ther. The common yellow head is a sight for all seasons, but the lily we regard as more exquisite. Or perhaps its incarnation is to go beyond perception.
Then theres the talk of astral planes thats part of a sevenfold (and more) hierarchy that makes up different vodies of existence. The astral is the inspirational source we look to and part of old consciousness form. It's interesting the way Steiner explains evolution of consciousness, a word that means being aware of self, and seems far more complex than the dead "mechanical" materialistic explanation currently espoused by modern biology. The very idea that spiritual evolution starts with nonexistence of matter till we reach a combined symbolic state then turn back is neough to either tantalize or be ridiculed by the prosaic mind. Indeed, we may find ourselves longing for something of the divine in this "secular age". Wouldn't it be nice to know that cosmic awareness has been evolving whole time? Surely, I've always felt there is something beyond this world.
