New atheism seems to be the opposite side of fundamentalist religion. They both espouse a faith in a way of carrying out their ideology. Religious fundamentalism is about believing only god and bible are the truth and that everyone else must obey, too (whether or not others follow the particular religion). The fundamentalist atheist crowd puts itself against religion by saying science and "reason" are only truth and anyone who doesn't agree is delusional, irrational, unstable, etc. Both extremes have a common theme along with flaws that should be obvious. Division really is a part of human nature.
What else is wrong with new atheism in general? They assume their is nothing outside material world and that reality isn't subjective. Ever since the skeptic movement took off in the 1970s theres been increasing adherence to materialism and scientism both in scientific establishment and outside world. The result is science either dismisses research that goes outside material explanations or tries to discredit it. Of course, many of us outside this worldview realize science isn't the only way to knowledge, which leads to marginalization of "right-brain" thinkers. How can these new atheists be so sure that anything is rationally-based anyways? The methodology is only as good as the people conducting it. And though scientific method may be "objective," but the scientific establishment is not objective because it's entangled with politics, special interests, industry, money, etc. And what if reality is subjective afterall?
Honestly, I think very way in which new atheists beleive that nothing except material reality is true proves once again that your reality is only reflection of your thoughts. But I should say that many atheist-skeptics don' seem to have too good of a grasp on science either as they routinely ignore, deny, and manipulate results of research into alternative sciences (parapsychology, alternative health).
As for the religious and god aspect, well what do atheists in general mean by "god"? What is the secular god and hoe would they like believers or anyone else to prove the "existence of god"? Theres everything from the Christian religion to New Agers that have belief in some kind of "god". Perhaps atheists are so confused by all the different religions and faiths out there their limited reductionary mindset simply can't handle it all and rejects everything. or maybe their simply afraid of anything existing outside the material world just like some religious fanatics feat that no god exist to send them to heaven. I could put out my own definition or idea of a god: physics has already discovered god, appeal to the occult that god is knowledge, or maybe the abstract kind of god in everything. Really its new atheists who have childish, fairytale view of "god" thats supernatural and perfect. They are the ones who really think believers believe in a "bearded wizard in the sky". Faith and spirituality, tends to be far more complex than a simply fairytale. Well, for those that actually have put thought into their spirituality and don't take to the atheist-materialist worldview.
It could be said that new atheism is simply a worldview flaunting itself as the truth. The establishment has long held atheist-materialism as it's paradigm not realizing that its going the way of "fats are bad for you". Science, as well as any knowledge system, is subject to change. The fact that fundamentalist atheists try to keep materialism-rationalism in place by meetings and groups may prove they know it's a dying paradigm. Honestly, anyone who really knows their "faith" doesn't see any contradiction between science and faith as they are both a part of the world we live and experience in. It's ironic that these new atheists don't realize that by holding rallies and putting their nonbelief on a stage they are actually participating in spirituality.
